Psykoanalys i serieformat | EC Comics

In April 1955, an American publisher launched something unusual: a comic book magazine called Psychoanalysis, with the subtitle “People Searching for Peace of Mind Through… Psychoanalysis.”

On the cover, an emotional woman on the couch, an attentive analyst holding a notepad — and the intimate setting of a therapeutic session transformed into visual storytelling.

The idea was to present what happened in psychoanalysis to the general public, especially young people. Three fictional characters had their stories followed over the course of four issues. Everything was condensed since — as the editors themselves warned — a real analysis would take years and could provoke “unbearable boredom” if portrayed faithfully.

The publication was a response to the moral censorship of the time, which accused comic books of negatively influencing young people. E.C. Comics, known for titles such as Tales from the Crypt, then sought to create “educational” content. Psychoanalysis, already popular but still surrounded by mystery, was the chosen theme.

The cover remains a curious symbol: it represents not only psychic suffering, but also the desire to understand it — and to bring it into the world, even in comic book form.
